Cross-Cultural Education in Social Care:

Korea and Viet Nam

Spring Break - March 12-22, 2015

Course Title: SOWK 450: International Studies in Korea or Vietnam (3 Credit Hours, approved for Foundational Studies: Integrative Upper-Division Elective)

:  South Korea--Hanil University; Viet Nam—Open University and Viet Nam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, University of Da Nang (Da Nang)

Course Plan and Objectives
: Social Work professors will lead two separate student groups to South Korea and Vietnam where all students will master the same learning objectives, based on one course syllabus, in two societal contexts.  Departure date from ISU will be the evening of March 12, 2015.


The course will present students learning opportunities to explore: (1) cross-cultural perspectives on family structure and development; (2) child development across the life span in different natural cultural contexts; (3) public policy and social interventions to promote family development in different natural cultural context; and (4) cross-cultural influences on social research or scientific inquiry. In this course students will immerse in the learning of culture, history, population; institutions of governance, social welfare, health care, and preventative services.  Lastly, students will learn to frame family and child development and service interventions in the framework of ethics and equity.


Cross Cultural Experience (Short Term Study Abroad):

This course also includes a cross-cultural experience in South Korea or in Vietnam from March 12-22, 2015.  As a group students will visit mental health, health and social service agencies as well as various cultural centers surrounding the area.


Estimated Cost:
$1800.00 – All inclusive and is being supported by Indiana State University Faculty Led Short Term Exchange Grant.  This cost does not include meals during travel days and shopping/souvenir money. Additional costs for students: visa, passport photos, and passport

Important Dates
Please note: Only 10 students will able to participate in the South Korean experience due to the limited capacity of Hanil University. We are able to take 10 students to Korea and 15 students to Viet Nam.  To secure a place and help your financial planning, security deposits are allowed on two separate dates: the first $500 on
November 14, 2014 and the next $1000 by December 14, 2014. The first 15 students who pay the deposit for the trip to Vietnam will be able to participate. The final deposit in the amount of $1,500 will be required by December 14, 2014.  Your deposit is non-refundable. A valid U.S. passport with six months before expiration is required.  Once the airfare is purchased, it is a non-transferrable and non-refundable ticket.
